A Seminar to Help You Read Memos, Letters, E-Mails, Reports & Books Faster & Easier
Course Description
Why is this seminar necessary
Have you ever experienced "Information Overload"? This occurs when you feel you have too much information to read, and not enough time to read it. As a result, your brain essentially shuts down your higher level thinking skills - which reduces your efficiency (which causes you to miss your deadlines, which causes more negative stress, etc.).
As working adults, we must read volumes of complex, poorly structured material under strict deadlines - combine this with family and social obligations and it is understandable why we sometimes feel overwhelmed.
Fortunately, this seminar will show you how to properly manage your reading assignments through time management, increased reading speed, improved reading comprehension, and effective application of new information.
What will I learn in this seminar?
In this seminar, you will learn how to use your personal thinking style to:
- Improve your critical reading and thinking skills
- Improve your concentration skills while reading
- Increase your overall reading speed
- Improve your overall comprehension
- Improve your retention and recall of everything you read
- Find key information quickly and accurately
- Decipher complex reading materials
- Time manage your reading assignments
How is it possible to improve my reading skills in just one seminar?
We will show you how to recognize words and phrases in a way that is common for fast readers. We will also show you how to use your preferred learning and thinking style to comprehend complex material that is outside your field of expertise - an extremely important skill for effective cross-training (or to prepare you for broader responsibilities).
Why didn't they teach this reading technique in school?
This technique was not required in school; basic reading skills were usually sufficient for a normal academic workload. But as an adult in the "information age" the need to read quickly and accurately has never been greater.
Equally important, critical thinking skills were rarely taught in school. In this seminar, we will show you how to read all types of information more critically to help you broaden your perspective. As you recognize the "big picture" while reading you will be more likely to develop comprehensive solutions to complex problems.
How is this seminar different from all those "speed reading" courses?
Difference #1 - Reading Speed
This is not a gimmick course. Many "speed reading" programs will show you how to "view" 5,000 words per minute or faster, which is useful for researching or reviewing material, but it is not reading - it is scanning. To read beyond 1,000 words per minute you must skip words; when you skip words, you lose comprehension.
As you know, simply having a general understanding of the reading material is not always sufficient. Technical materials, for instance, require a slower, more comprehensive reading approach during certain sections. Our reading methods actually work like a car accelerator pedal - you will learn how to adjust your reading speed to match the material.
In fact, by the end of this seminar you will see a dramatic improvement in your reading speed and comprehension. As you continue to apply our reading methods, you should be able to exceed 5,000 words per minute for "light" reading or research work, and average 600 words per minute for more challenging material. NOTE: The average reading speed for adults is 250 words per minute.
Difference #2 - Reading Comprehension
A fast reading speed improves efficiency only if the reader comprehends the material the first time through. Therefore, this seminar involves a heavy focus on reading comprehension. We will show you how to structure each reading assignment to ensure the pertinent information is "locked" in your head for quick comprehension and even faster recall.
To help you immediately apply this new skill in your current job you will actually practice our reading strategies on your own work-related documents (while in the seminar).
